Tent Restrictions Removed in North Wildwood After Beach Repairs
North Wildwood has lifted its ban on tents just before the Independence Day weekend. The City Council ended the ban following an emergency beach replenishment project ordered by Governor Phil Murphy, which restored enough sand to the beach. Mayor Patrick Rosenello confirmed that the beach's width is now sufficient, making the ban unnecessary. However, tents and cabanas are still restricted to a maximum size of 10 feet by 10 feet.
The original ban included various beach structures such as tarps, cabanas, pavilions, and "sport-brellas" due to significant beach erosion and safety concerns. While North Wildwood has lifted its ban, at least 22 other towns still maintain restrictions, citing issues like blocked ocean views and lightning risks. The federal U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project to address beach erosion has been delayed and is expected to begin in 2025.
Atlantic Shores Wind Project Clears Major Hurdle
The U.S. Interior Department approved New Jersey's first offshore wind farm, Atlantic Shores, marking a significant step towards the state's clean energy goals. The project, located between Atlantic City and Long Beach Island, will produce 2,800 megawatts of power, enough for 1 million homes. It awaits further federal and state permits before construction can begin. The project is part of a broader effort under the Biden administration to deploy 30 gigawatts of offshore energy by 2030 and is expected to create numerous union jobs.
