What You Need to Know for

Summer 2024

As spring blossoms in New Jersey, it's time for locals and visitors alike to turn their thoughts to the sunny days ahead at the Jersey Shore. With summer on the horizon, understanding the cost of beach access is essential for those planning to enjoy the sand and sea. New Jersey's picturesque beach towns, known for their unique charm and beautiful coastlines, often require a paid badge or tag for entry onto the beaches, with prices varying widely.

Key Points on Beach Access and Costs:

Paid Badges Required: Most beach towns have a system in place requiring beach-goers to purchase badges or tags, with prices ranging from as low as $3.50 for a daily pass to up to $150 for a seasonal badge.

Pre-Season Discounts: Savvy beach-lovers can take advantage of pre-season discounts offered by many towns for those who purchase their badges early.

Veterans, Seniors, and Disability Discounts: In a show of appreciation and inclusivity, over a dozen beaches provide free access to veterans. Many locations also offer discounted rates for seniors and individuals with disabilities. Generally, young children can access beaches for free.

Specific Beach Pricing:

Cape May:

  • Season badge, pre-season (through April 30): $30

  • Season badge, full price: $40

  • Weekly: $25

  • 3-day: $20

Unveiling History: Explore the Holocaust's Last Chapter
with Robert Holden

"Victims and Survivors," a profound educational course led by the esteemed Robert Holden, delves into one of history's darkest chapters—the Holocaust, with a focus on the Hungarian Jews, the last victims tragically sent to Auschwitz. This course is enriched by the screening of Steven Spielberg's Oscar-winning documentary, "The Last Days," alongside select clips from "Echoes and Reflections" by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).

The course promises an immersive learning experience, where participants are not only viewers but active discussants, engaging with the material as the film unfolds. "The Last Days" shines a light on the harrowing experiences of Hungarian Jews during the final stages of World War II, a time when approximately 565,000 were mercilessly killed by Nazi and Hungarian forces.

Robert Holden, the architect of this course, brings a wealth of knowledge and personal dedication to Holocaust and Genocide Studies. Having retired in 2006 as a Gifted/Talented teacher in Ocean City and later in 2016 as a Senior Adjunct Professor of History at ACCC’s Cape May County campus, Holden's expertise is unparalleled. His contributions to the field extend beyond teaching; he has served on the board of the SJHC, the HPSUT, and the Seaville Friends Meeting, evidencing his commitment to community and historical remembrance.

Holden is also an accomplished author, with works such as "Upper Township and its Ten Villages" and "Visas to Shanghai," which provide insightful historical narratives and are available for lending at the library. These books, along with his curated course, offer a deep dive into the complexities of history, the unfathomable human cost of the Holocaust, and the resilience of those who survived.

Phillies Rally Past Braves in Stunning Seventh-Inning Turnaround

In a dramatic twist during Sunday's game, the Philadelphia Phillies mounted a comeback in the seventh inning, defeating the Atlanta Braves 5-4. The pivotal moment came when an initial call was overturned after a replay review, preventing Atlanta from securing a third out and setting the stage for the Phillies' rally. Trea Turner delivered a crucial single that tied the game, followed by Alec Bohm's two-run single, which ultimately clinched the Phillies' victory. This win was particularly relieving for the team and their supporters, especially after suffering two consecutive losses against the Braves.

Chris Sale's debut for Atlanta started strong, but the game's tide turned following the overturned call. Despite Sale's impressive performance, striking out seven and allowing only two runs over 5 1/3 innings, it was not enough to fend off the Phillies' late-game surge. The Braves' hope for a sweep was dashed, marking a moment of redemption for the Phillies, buoyed by their fans' roaring approval.

The Phillies' bullpen played a significant role in the victory, limiting the Braves to just seven hits—a stark contrast to Atlanta's offensive explosion in the first two games. Ranger Suárez, along with five relievers, managed to keep the Braves at bay, with Matt Strahm earning the win after a scoreless seventh inning.

Adding to the Phillies' good news was the condition of Bryce Harper, who seemed unscathed after a concerning fall in the previous game. Harper's health remains a positive note as the team looks forward to leveraging their roster's full potential.

Chris Sale's move to Atlanta, despite his injury-prone past, signals the Braves' ambitious plans. With a new $38 million deal, Sale joins a rotation that boasts talent and experience, aiming to bolster Atlanta's pitching lineup alongside the 2023 All-Stars and seasoned players.

This victory not only showcases the unpredictable nature of baseball but also demonstrates the Phillies' resilience and ability to capitalize on crucial moments. It injects momentum into their season, offering a glimpse of the potential drama and excitement the upcoming games hold.
