Strengthening Coastal Resilience: Cape May to Revitalize Promenade with $6.7M
Cape May's Promenade is poised for major upgrades and renovations, courtesy of a significant $6.7 million grant from the state Boardwalk Preservation Fund. Mayor Zack Mullock shared the news of this grant, one of the city's largest ever, during a recent City Council meeting.
The grant is part of a larger state-wide initiative that distributed $100 million across 18 grants, all aimed at strengthening the economic and protective functions of boardwalks in coastal areas. This funding comes from federal pandemic fiscal recovery funds and recognizes the vital role that boardwalks, like Cape May's Promenade, play in their communities.
Boardwalks serve not only as popular recreational spaces but also as essential infrastructure, helping to protect cities like Cape May from the threats posed by the sea. The substantial grant will enable Cape May to make significant enhancements and repairs to its Promenade, ensuring that it can continue to serve both its economic and protective roles for years to come.
Cape May County Cuts Spending and Tax Rate Amid Fiscal Optimism
Cape May County, New Jersey, is poised to implement a $900,000 reduction in spending for the current year. This cost-cutting measure is attributed to the privatization of Crest Haven Nursing Home and a significant decrease in salaries and wages, amounting to over $5 million.
Despite the spending cuts, the county has managed to lower the tax rate by 2 cents while simultaneously expecting to raise an additional $4 million in taxes. This is due to a considerable increase in the ratables base, which refers to the total value of properties subject to taxation within the county.
The 2024 budget, totaling $214.5 million, emphasizes the county's commitment to fiscal responsibility by prioritizing debt reduction and capital projects. Remarkably, the county has achieved this while maintaining stable operational costs across various departments, ensuring the efficient delivery of essential services to its residents.
To further promote transparency and community engagement, Cape May County will hold a public hearing on March 26 to discuss the budget in detail. This forum will provide an opportunity for residents to gain insights into the county's financial plans and express their opinions on the proposed measures.
The combination of spending reductions, tax rate cuts, and a focus on debt reduction and capital projects demonstrates Cape May County's dedication to maintaining a balanced budget while investing in the future of the community. As the county moves forward with its fiscal plans, residents can expect a continued commitment to responsible governance and the delivery of high-quality services.
