Due to the construction, the area will be closed to through traffic, with detours set up to redirect vehicles. Fentanyl Crisis: Nearly All Drugs in Cape May County Contaminated
In Cape May County, an alarming trend has emerged as nearly all drugs tested at the county prosecutor’s office have been found to contain fentanyl, a synthetic opioid significantly more potent than heroin and morphine. This revelation was made by Ken Hand, a chemist at the Prosecutor’s Office, during a panel discussion aimed at addressing the escalating drug crisis within the region. The panel, consisting of law enforcement personnel, social workers, and public health experts, convened at Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Erma to shed light on the perilous state of drug consumption in the community. The attendees were informed about the pervasive infiltration of fentanyl into street and so-called recreational drugs, rendering them exceedingly dangerous and often lethal, even at low dosages.
The discussion underscored the critical availability of Narcan, a life-saving narcotic antagonist that can reverse opioid overdoses, which is being offered for free throughout New Jersey. Authorities are urging everyone to have access to Narcan, emphasizing its potential to save lives in emergency situations. The panel also touched upon the disturbing trend of drugs being laced with not only fentanyl but also xylazine, a sedative that intensifies the high from fentanyl but with fatal consequences.
Public health officials and addiction recovery specialists highlighted the importance of early and open discussions about mental health and substance abuse as preventative measures. They advocated for a compassionate approach towards individuals struggling with addiction, promoting education, better mental health resources, and community support as essential strategies to combat this crisis.
