Unsung Heroes: A Night of
Tribute to Holocaust Rescuers
Led by Robert Holden

Auschwitz

Robert Holden, a respected educator with a rich background in teaching history and Holocaust studies, will lead a poignant discussion titled "Rescue During the Holocaust" on Monday, March 4th, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. This session is dedicated to the brave individuals who risked their lives to save Jews and others from the Nazis during the Holocaust. The lecture will highlight various rescuers from different professions and walks of life, showcasing their unparalleled courage.

The event will feature the film "The Courage to Care," which profiles a diverse group of rescuers, including notable figures such as Feng-Shan Ho, Varian Fry, Raul Wallenberg, Chiune Sugihara, and Nicholas Winton, who organized the Kindertransports. Depending on the time available, additional rescuers may also be discussed.

Holden, now retired, has an impressive background as a Gifted/Talented teacher in Ocean City and as a Senior Adjunct Professor of History at ACCC’s Cape May County campus, where he developed and taught a course on Holocaust and Genocide Studies. His contributions extend beyond teaching; he serves on the board of the SJHC, the HPSUT, and the Seaville Friends Meeting. Holden is also an accomplished author, with works such as "Upper Township and its Ten Villages" and "Visas to Shanghai," both available in the library.

Chocolate Bars Get a Makeover as
Cocoa Costs Skyrocket

In the face of soaring cocoa prices, reaching an unprecedented $6,000 per ton, the confectionery industry is undergoing a significant transformation. As the cost of cocoa climbs due to factors such as extreme weather conditions, crop diseases, and underlying structural issues, chocolate manufacturers are adapting by altering the composition of their products. This shift involves reducing the chocolate content in bars and introducing alternative ingredients like caramel, nuts, and even integrating air pockets to maintain size without the same cocoa quantity. This strategy not only addresses the economic pressures of rising cocoa costs but also introduces consumers to diverse flavor profiles.

Notably, major candy brands are evolving their product lines to de-emphasize chocolate. For instance, Hershey has announced a substantial increase in its production of gummy candies, planning a 50% capacity boost in 2024. Similarly, chocolate bars are undergoing changes in size and composition without a corresponding decrease in price, a practice known as shrinkflation. Mars, for example, reduced the size of its Galaxy bars by 10 grams while keeping prices constant.

Innovation in flavor and texture is becoming more apparent, with Nestle introducing a chocolate hazelnut variant of its Aero bars in the UK, characterized by their airy texture, and Hershey launching a partially chocolate-dipped, chocolate frosted donut-flavored Kit Kat in the US. The trend towards incorporating non-chocolate fillings is on the rise, with more than 40% of molded and segmented chocolate bars in the US now featuring ingredients other than chocolate, such as caramel, nuts, and fruit.

Advertising efforts are also reflecting these shifts, with notable examples from this year's Super Bowl ads showcasing Mars' peanut butter-filled M&M's and Hershey's Reese's cups with caramel interiors. Hershey's expansion into other candy segments is highlighted by its partnership with NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal to promote its gummy candy range.

As the industry navigates these changes, consumers looking for their traditional chocolate indulgences may face higher prices, reflecting the increased cost of cocoa and the innovative adaptations by candy manufacturers.

Apple TV+ Surprises Subscribers with Free Streaming of 50 Blockbuster Movies

just got my new toy let's enjoy Netflix!!!

Apple TV+ has unveiled an enticing offer for its subscribers in the United States: a limited-time collection of 50 iconic movies available for free streaming.

This move, seen as the platform's largest content drop to date, aligns with the release of themed originals, signaling a potential shift in Apple's exclusive originals strategy. The collection boasts renowned titles such as "The Wolf of Wall Street," "Saving Private Ryan," and "Mad Max: Fury Road," among others.

However, this offer is fleeting, with availability only until the end of March or April, urging subscribers to seize the opportunity swiftly.
