Originally established to enforce trade laws and prevent smuggling, the service now also performs humanitarian duties and maritime law enforcement. It received its current name in 1915, following a merger of the Revenue Cutter Service and the U.S. Life-Saving Service. The Coast Guard's mission today includes protecting the public, the environment, and U.S. economic interests in various maritime regions.
